What supporting software is needed to view e-Aadhaar? Ever downloaded your e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI website, only to stare at a locked PDF file? You’re not alone- it’s a common problem, but fixing it is a straightforward process with the right tools.
Online download of the Aadhaar Card is an easy way to access your identity document. However, simply downloading the Aadhaar Card PDF will not be enough, as you need a PDF reader to open it without any issue. For this, UIDAI itself suggests Adobe Reader.
Why e-Aadhaar Needs Special Software
e-Aadhaar is a secure, digitally signed PDF from UIDAI, just as valid as your physical Aadhaar card for any purpose. It requires a PDF reader to open because of its password protection and digital verification features. UIDAI specifically recommends, and even mentions it clearly on its website, to use Adobe Reader to ensure full compatibility, including signature validation.
Official Recommendation: Adobe Reader
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) states that Aadhaar holders need Adobe Reader to view the digitally verified e-Aadhaar. Download it free from the official site at https://get.adobe.com/reader/.
How to download and install Adobe Reader
To download and install adobe reader, follow the steps provided below:
- Go to https://get.adobe.com/reader/ in your browser.
- Click “Download Adobe Reader” and run the installer.
- Once installed, double-click your e-Aadhaar PDF, enter the password, and you’re in.
Unlock Your Aadhaar with the Password
The password is always the first four letters of your name (in UPPERCASE) plus your year of birth (YYYY). Examples from UIDAI:
- Name: Suresh Kumar, Year: 1990 – SURE1990
- Name: Sai Kumar, Year: 1990 – SAIK1990
- Name: P. Kumar, Year: 1990 – P.KU1990
- Name: Ria, Year: 1990 – RIA1990
View Downloaded Aadhaar on Mobile Devices
On Android or iOS, Adobe Acrobat Reader (free app) handles e-Aadhaar perfectly, including password entry and signature checks. Alternatively, UIDAI’s official mAadhaar app lets you download and view e-Aadhaar directly without extra software, just ensure your phone number is registered with Aadhaar.
