The address on the Aadhaar Card can be updated or changed online and offline in both methods. Check How to Update Address on Aadhaar Card Online and Offline Here.
Changing your home or shifting to a new city is common, but updating your address on official documents is something many people forget. Since Aadhaar is widely used for banking, school admissions, LPG connections, and government benefits, having your correct address on it is very important. Even a small mismatch can sometimes create delays in verification or documentation.
Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), and it allows residents to update their address whenever needed.
You can update your address online through the official UIDAI portal by uploading valid proof of your new address and verifying with an OTP sent to your registered mobile number. For those who are not comfortable with online steps or need assistance, visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra is another option. At the center, you can submit your documents and complete the update process with the help of an operator.
Understanding Aadhaar Card
The Aadhaar card is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and comes with a 12-digit unique number that belongs only to you. It acts as a widely accepted proof of identity and address across India, making it one of the most commonly used documents today.
Over the years, Aadhaar has become part of everyday life. Whether you are opening a bank account, filing income tax returns, getting a mobile SIM card, or applying for government schemes, Aadhaar often makes the process smoother and faster. It helps reduce paperwork and simplifies verification.
However, if the address mentioned on your Aadhaar is outdated, it can create unnecessary problems. You might miss important letters, face delays in availing area-specific benefits, or run into issues during identity verification. Keeping your details updated ensures that your Aadhaar continues to work seamlessly whenever you need it.

Key Points to Remember
- Before submitting your update request, take a moment to carefully check all the details you’ve entered. Make sure everything matches your supporting document exactly, right down to the spelling. Even a small difference in name or address can sometimes lead to rejection.
- If you apply online, the update usually takes around 10-15 working days. Offline requests at an Aadhaar centre may sometimes move a bit faster, but during busy periods, delays can still happen. So it’s always good to be patient and keep track of your request.
- Your address proof should be recent, ideally issued within the last three months, and it must clearly show both your name and your new address. Also, if the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar is no longer active, update it first. This ensures you receive OTPs and important notifications without any trouble.
- In case your request gets rejected, don’t worry. Carefully read the reason mentioned, correct the issue (such as unclear documents or mismatched details), and apply again following the official guidelines of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
- Most importantly, be cautious while entering your personal details online. Always use the official UIDAI website or app and never share your Aadhaar information on unknown or unsecured platforms.
- After submitting your request, regularly check its progress using the Update Request Number (URN) you receive. For added convenience, you can also download the official mAadhaar app to easily view your Aadhaar details and track update status anytime.
