FAQs

1. My Aadhaar is showing a deactivated status. What should I do?

If your Aadhaar status appears as “deactivated,” it is recommended to immediately reach out to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to understand the reason. You can do this by calling the toll-free helpline number 1947, sending an email to help@uidai.gov.in, or visiting your nearest UIDAI Regional Office.

2. How can I change my first name or full name in Aadhaar?

To update your first name or full name in your Aadhaar, you must provide a Gazette notification issued by either a State Government or the Union Government, along with an old Proof of Identity (POI) that carries your name as mentioned in the Aadhaar. It is essential that the address mentioned in the Gazette notification matches the one registered in your Aadhaar record. Without accurate address matching, your request may be rejected.

3. Can I change my Aadhaar photo? Is there any limit to the number of times it can be changed?

Yes, you can change your photograph in Aadhaar. There is no restriction on the number of times the Aadhaar photo can be updated. To do this, visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (enrollment/update center) and request a biometric update.

4. What documents are required to request a name or date of birth correction beyond the allowed limit?

If you have already used up the permitted number of changes for your name or date of birth, additional updates can still be made if you provide valid and verifiable documents. Acceptable documents include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • PAN Card
  • Any other Government-issued proof of Date of Birth
  • For name changes, you may submit a Gazette notification, Marriage Certificate, Court Order, or any other legal document that justifies the change. You can also visit the official UIDAI website for a complete list of accepted documents.

5. How can I file a complaint if my Aadhaar update request is rejected?

In case your Aadhaar update request is declined, you can file a grievance using any of the following methods:

  • Online: Visit the UIDAI Grievance Redressal Portal and submit your complaint.
  • Email: Send a detailed email explaining your issue to help@uidai.gov.in.
  • Phone: Call the UIDAI Toll-Free Helpline at 1947 to speak with a customer service executive.
  • In Person: Visit the nearest UIDAI Regional Office. You can find location details on the official UIDAI website.

6. Can I request an exception to update Aadhaar details beyond the allowed limit?

Yes, UIDAI considers special cases where a resident needs to update their Aadhaar details beyond the standard limit. You must visit the regional UIDAI office and submit a formal written request along with supporting documents and valid justification. UIDAI will evaluate your request and may grant an exception if the documents and reason are found to be satisfactory.
