Learn about the latest Aadhaar Card update rules, including biometric & demographic updates, fees, required documents, online & offline methods, and new UIDAI guidelines.
Aadhaar is more than just a number. It’s a identity document that many people rely on for everyday tasks like banking, school admissions, government schemes, and official verification. Issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Aadhaar contains important personal details such as your name, date of birth, address, photograph, and biometric information.
Over time, situations change. You might move to a new address, change your mobile number, correct a spelling mistake in your name, or update biometrics for a child who has turned 5 or 15. To manage such changes, UIDAI has set clear Aadhaar card update rules. These rules define what information can be updated, how many times certain fields can be changed, and what documents are required as proof.
In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about Aadhaar card update rules, including what details can be updated, how often you can update, methods of updating (online and offline), required documents, time taken, and recent rule changes.
What Details Can Be Updated in Aadhaar?
UIDAI allows users to update or correct the following details on their Aadhaar card:
| Type of Information | Details |
|---|---|
| Demographic Information |
|
| Biometric Information |
|
Note: Children need to update biometric data once at the age of 5 and again at the age of 15.
Latest Aadhaar Update Rules (2023-2025)
UIDAI has recently made a few significant changes to streamline the Aadhaar update process. Here’s an overview of the current rules:
1. Document Update Every 10 Years (Recommended, not Mandatory)
As per the latest UIDAI notification, residents are advised to update their Aadhaar documents every 10 years from the date of enrolment. This includes updating proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA) documents to ensure the Aadhaar data remains accurate.
- You must upload the latest documents like PAN, passport, utility bills, etc.
- This update is recommended, not mandatory.
2. Limited Attempts for Certain Changes
UIDAI has limited the number of times you can update specific fields:
| Field | No. of Times Allowed |
|---|---|
| Name | 2 times |
| Date of Birth | 1 time (with strict scrutiny) |
| Gender | 1 time |
| Address | Unlimited |
| Mobile Number | Unlimited |
Changes to DoB or name should match your original PoI documents. Major changes may be rejected.
